Conference Board: Employment Soft In 2009

The Conference Board‘s latest Employment Trends Index says the country should expect job losses and rising unemployment well into 2009.

The index registered a score of 110.8 in August, down 0.5 percent from July’s score and down more than 8 percent from a year ago, the nonprofit board said. The board draws its index from eight labor market indicators including U.S. Department of Labor data, the percentage of firms with one or more job opening and the number of employees hired by temporary employment agencies.

The board said all eight indicators have been “deteriorating” for an entire year.
