Computer Shipments Post Gains During Holiday Season

Framingham-based technology researcher IDC estimates that U.S. sales for personal computers increased 24 percent in 2009 compared to a year earlier.

Discounted prices for computers during the holiday season helped contribute to a record 20.7 million units being shipped in the fourth quarter of 2009.

International sales for personal computers increased 15 percent in the quarter, helping year-over-year growth increase by 2.3 percent internationally.

Hewlett Packard made the most PC shipments in the United States during the quarter and increased shipments 23 percent compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Dell increased shipments for the quarter by 5 percent in the United States compared to the same time last year.
