The Independent Community Bankers of America says community banks have seen an increase in business as the economy has worsened.
In a survey of 743 community banks conducted with Aite Group LLC, the ICBA found that 55 percent of survey participants saw an increase in deposits the second half of 2008 while 17 percent had customers withdraw deposits.
Also during the second half of the year, 57 percent of banks surveyed said they experienced an increase in new retail customers and 47 percent said they saw an increase in new business customers.
Another 40 percent of bankers that took the survey said they've seen an increase in loan volume and 11 percent said the economic crisis has "significantly" curtailed their institutions' ability to make loans.
However, the bankers did say they've seen increases in loan delinquencies as the consequences of the risky lending done by larger institutions has trickled down.
