Commonwealth Medicine launches center for childhood trauma with $1M state funding

UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester announced its public service consulting division, Commonwealth Medicine has launched a new Center on Child Wellbeing and Trauma in partnership with the Massachusetts Office of the Child Advocate, according to a Thursday press release.

The center will offer training, technical assistance, and professional development to child service organizations to help them become more educated on trauma.

“Childhood trauma can have a lifelong effect on a child, impacting their physical and mental health, learning abilities and ultimately their path to success,” said Lisa Colombo, executive vice chancellor for Commonwealth Medicine, in the release.

In 2020, the state’s Childhood Trauma Task Force recommended creating such a center, with Gov. Baker providing $1 million to support its creation and initial operation.
