Westborough-based Columbia Tech, a subsidiary of Coghlin Cos., has entered a manufacturing partnership with Lincoln-based MVP Robotics, the business behind robotic tackling dummies for football team practices, Columbia Tech announced on Tuesday.
The second MVP model, dubbed the MVP Sprint, was developed in collaboration with and will be manufactured by Columbia Tech. The MVP Sprint is designed to be used in high school and youth programs.
“We’re very excited to be working on a project that will have such a positive impact and provide a safer practice environment for athletes,” said Chris Coghlin, president and CEO of Coghlin Cos., in a press release. “It’s an innovative and game-changing piece of technology, and we’ve developed an excellent working relationship with the team at MVP Robotics to ensure successful commercialization.”
The Mobile Virtual Player is designed to mimic a charging lineman or linebacker during training sessions, while also reducing head injuries in players, according to Columbia Tech. MVP was first used on students at Dartmouth University in New Hampshire.
The school reported a 58% reduction in concussions during the robot’s first two years in use, according to Columbia Tech.
