The Nov. 20 airing of ‘CSI: Miami’ featured a Columbia Tech-assembled explosives detector known as a sniffer, which detects suspicious vapors.
The Worcester-based manufacturer produces the Quantum Sniffer, a device that “sniffs” out identifiable vapors produced by many types of explosives, and identifies them on an LCD screen. The company makes the device for Implant Sciences in Wakefield, which developed the ionization process used in the Quantum Sniffer.
In addition to its five minutes of fame, the Quantum Sniffer is used in aviation and transportation security, customs and border protection, inspections of cargo and mail, and in military applications.
