Coakley: End Hidden Cell Charges

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office is asking the Federal Communications Commission to require more transparency from wireless phone companies.

The FCC is looking into requiring wireless companies to alert customers before they exceed the minutes, messages or data usage included in their plans.

Coakley cited an FCC survey that says one out of six cell phone users encounters unexpected charges and fees. It said the U.S. should adopt regulations in place in the European Union that require carriers to provide real-time usage alerts and caps on usage that go into effect automatically but give customers the chance to opt out.
