The board of UMass Memorial Health Care has voted for a merger between its hospitals in Clinton and Leominster, with a final decision from the state to come within the next six months.
The board of trustees voted Wednesday to approve the merger of UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster and UMass Memorial - Clinton Hospital. Details of the planned merger will be filed and submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) next month for approval.
The announcement confirms plans that the organization had previously been exploring. Hospital mergers are a large trend in health care, according to an official from the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association.
The decision comes as Clinton Hospital continues to lose money. Through the end of June this year, the hospital has lost $1.1 million, according to the latest report from the Massachusetts Center for Health Information and Analysis. During that same period, HealthAlliance Hospital posted $5.2 million in profits.
It will take up to six months for approval, during which time Clinton Hospital will continue to operate under its existing hospital license.
