The merger of UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster and UMass Memorial - Clinton and a proposed emergency department expansion were both approved yesterday by the Massachusetts Public Health Council, the healthcare system announced Thursday.
Under the merger, which is expected to be official Oct. 1, Clinton Hospital will become a branch operating under the HealthAlliance license. The emergency department groundbreaking will take place in early spring, according to a press release from UMass Memorial.
The healthcare system also announced that Lisa Colombo, the president of Clinton Hospital, has been promoted to the position of senior vice president for patient care services, and chief nursing officer at UMass Memorial Medical Center, effective Jan. 19. In her new role, Colombo will oversee nursing operations at UMass Memorial’s Worcester locations and will join the leadership team at the healthcare system as an advocate for nursing.
The merger, announced last summer, was fast-tracked after the state Health Policy Commission opted not to conduct a full cost and impact review. It brings together one of UMass Memorial’s most successful hospitals in terms of patient satisfaction -- Clinton -- with HealthAlliance, one of its most profitable.
