He's not a regular “player” in the region, but what Cliff Schorer has accomplished as board president at the Worcester Art Museum over the last two years has helped revive attendance and support.
The “serial entrepreneur,” as museum director Matthias Waschek refers to Schorer, was critical in convincing the Waschek to replace long-time director Jim Welu in 2011. In the last two years, foot traffic has risen nearly 20 percent, and web traffic more than doubled.
When Waschek arrived, Schorer was already involved in talks with Higgins Armory Museum about taking its massive collection of medieval armor and transferring it to renovated space on Salisbury Street, according to Waschek, a momentous event that's about to happen.
The recent gift of Paulo Veronese's Venus Disarming Cupid is another good stroke of luck that has happened on Schorer's watch.
“We need him,” Waschek said.
