Clean energy sector adds more jobs

The clean energy industry added over 4,000 new jobs in the past year, easily outpacing overall employment growth in Massachusetts, according to a new report.
The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center released its annual survey on Wednesday, finding that the clean energy sector, including wind, solar, energy efficiency and other specialties, has seen an 81 percent increase in employment since 2010. The total industry now employs 109,226 people in Massachusetts.
Clean energy jobs grew at a 4 percent clip over the past year, adding 4,014 jobs since 2016 as statewide employment climbed by just 1.5 percent.
Sixty-five percent of the renewable energy workforce has jobs in research, manufacturing, trade or solar deployment, 12 percent work in wind and the remaining 23 percent work in fields such as hydropower and bioenergy.
"Consumer choice, business opportunity and the forward thinking policies championed by the Baker-Polito Administration have fueled Massachusetts' transition to a cleaner, more resilient, more cost-effective renewable energy portfolio and have made the Commonwealth a national leader in clean energy," Clean Energy Center CEO Stephen Pike said in a message prefacing the report.
The report also found that 68 percent of workers in clean energy fields earn more than $50,000 a year, and the industry generates $11.4 billion in economic activity and 2.3 percent of the state's gross domestic product
