The game design programs at Clark University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute have been named among the nation’s best on The Princeton Review’s lists ranking the top 50 game design college programs and top 25 graduate programs for 2025.
Clark University ranked third in the nation on The Princeton Review’s top undergraduate game design program list and fifth on its graduate list. WPI came in 12th for its undergraduate program and 13th for its graduate program.
Both Worcester universities were the sole Massachusetts institutions to earn The Princeton Review’s rankings for 2025.
The Princeton Review scored college programs based on institutional survey data, including academic offerings in game design, faculty credentials, and career outcomes, according to its website. The company’s 50-question survey covering academics, faculty, technology, and career topics, was given to administrators at 150 institutions throughout the U.S., Canada, and some additional countries.
Examples of survey questions included what game design-related courses were offered, the percentage of gaming faculty with PhDs, and what technologies or engines the institutions utilized.
"'The schools that made our lists for 2025 have awesome programs in game design. Their facilities are superb. Their facilities are state-of-the-art, and their alumni include many of the video game industry’s most successful designers, developers, and entrepreneurs. We highly recommend them to any student considering a career in this exciting field," Rob Franek, The Princeton Review's editor-in-chief, said in a Tuesday press release.
