Clark University in Worcester announced a new interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in genocide studies to begin in the fall semester.
The degree, part of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark, will integrate fields like political science, anthropology, and pedagogy in studies of genocide across a global context.
To facilitate the interdisciplinary aspect of the curriculum, Clark plans to add two three-year social science faculty appointments to the center in addition to the three historians who chair the Strassler Center. The university previously offered a specialized Ph.D. track studying historical cases of genocide and mass violence, but the new degree targets students aiming to work in non-academic settings.
Motivated partially by the evolving professional opportunities available to doctoral students, the program plans to train students in a variety of disciplinary approaches to address problems in real-world contexts. Increasingly, doctoral students pursue careers in government and NGOs after graduation and benefit from more application-oriented education.
