Clark Prof Named To State Board

Gov. Deval Patrick has appointed James McDermott, an assistant professor at Worcester's Clark University, to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

McDermott has worked in teaching for almost 40 years, including five years as an English teacher at the University Park Campus School in Worcester. He was the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year in 1988.

McDermott served on the Massachusetts State Framework Committee and has helped shape English standards and curricula at the local and state level. He is also co-founder and co-director of the Central Massachusetts Writing Project.

Also appointed to the board was Vanessa Calderón-Rosado, CEO of the Boston-based nonprofit Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción.
