Clark University is launching a new study program intended to support and attract more international students, and particularly those who would benefit from more English language training before matriculating in the United States, the Worcester school announced on Friday.
Dubbed the Global Leaders and Scholars Program, participating students will begin their four-year Clark University degree by studying abroad for two semesters at either the East China Normal University in Shanghai or the Council on International Education Exchange Global Institute in Berlin. During that first year of college, students will study English for the American classroom and take other university-preparation courses, according to Clark.
After completing two semesters, GLS students will then spend the summer at Clark’s campus to continue their English language studies, immersing in American culture and preparing to complete their remaining three undergraduate years at Clark’s Worcester campus.
“This program is extremely well designed — year one lays the critical foundation, both socially and academically, for the next three years. It sets students up for success and for a truly transformational educational adventure,” said Meredith Twombly, vice president of undergraduate admissions and financial aid, in a statement.
Twombly said the program meets international English language learners where they are at, while also better preparing them for matriculating at Clark.
“We provide an opportunity for international students to transition to studying in the U.S. without delaying their academic progress, while also having a rich intercultural and transnational experience,” said John LaBrie, dean of the School of Professional Studies and associate provost, in a statement.
