Clark University in Worcester has expanded and renamed its urban studies concentration, formerly known as the school's urban development and social change program, the school announced on Wednesday.

The new altered concentration will still prioritize social change, the school said, but will cover more diverse approaches to understanding what it means to be urban, including the humanities, according to the announcement. Students from any major are eligible to participate in the program, which focuses on the historical, cultural, social, economic and political factors that shape cities, as well as how those cities impact the people who live there.

Professor Ramón Borges-Méndez, program coordinator, contended Worcester and other mid-sized cities are valuable case studies because they act as gateways for immigrant communities, sometimes experience rapid growth and are able to achieve notable sustainability changes.

“The program, by expanding into a variety of new topics, will serve as a very interesting forum where we can continue addressing the issues that this new generation is going to have to be thinking about,” Borges-Méndez said in a statement.

The concentration was first founded in 2000 and has since expanded to include international studies, according to the announcement.
