Clark University in Worcester expanded the area in Worcester in which it offers free tuition through its University Park Partnership Scholarship.
The zone has included the west side of Main Street to Park Avenue from Mill Street in Webster Square to May Street, and on the east side of Main Street to Walpole Street between Freeland Street and Gardner Street, as well as the Lakeside Apartments, a Worcester Housing Authority Development nearby.
The expansion extends the zone on the east side of Main Street north to Lagrange Street and south to Cambridge Street, adding 1,100 qualifying students, according to a Friday press release from Clark.
“Not only does Clark wish to continue providing this longstanding benefit to members of our community, we want to expand our reach and make it possible for even more Worcester residents to be able to realize their dream of getting a college degree. As neighbors and partners, our collective futures are tied,” Clark Vice President of Government and Community Affairs Joseph Corazzini said in the press release. “We hope the young people in our community will take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience all that Clark has to offer.”
Ten UPP scholars currently attend the University. The program has awarded 165 scholarships since 2000, adding up to $11.3 million in free tuition. Scholarships have been awarded to a number of local schools including Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester and Worcester Technical High School, but 58% of UPP scholars come from the University Park Campus School created in 1997 as a partnership between Worcester Public Schools and Clark University.
