The City of Worcester is seeking an executive search firm to find the person who will become chief equity officer in the new executive office of diversity, equity and inclusion.
“Under the direction of the chief equity officer, the City is looking to accelerate representation within the City’s workforce and leadership,” said City Manager Eric Batista in a Tuesday press release. “The Chief Equity Officer will lead the newly established Executive Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and its efforts in recruiting, hiring, developing, retaining, engaging, and motivating a diverse, results-oriented, high-performing workforce that is representative of the community we serve.”
In February, the city announced it would give more power to the executive office of diversity, equity and inclusion. The city anticipates that the new chief equity officer will be onboarded in Fall 2023, according to the release.
The announcement that it will use a search firm to fill the role comes after an unflattering report led the office of the city manager to reassess the mechanisms of the diversity officer’s role. The last person to lead the diversity initiatives for the city, then chief diversity officer Stephanie Williams, left the role in March 2022. She was the third CDO since the position was created in 2016.
The city is requesting proposals from firms with experience conducting executive searches for chief diversity officers or chief equity officers. Proposals will be accepted until May 10.
