Technology spending is projected to grow next year, with 87 percent of those surveyed by Framingham-based CIO — which focuses on executive-level IT professionals — saying they will increase or maintain their budgets in 2015, with an average increase of 4.9 percent.
Technology budgets will be distributed across core and edge technologies, including mobile, social media, customer relationship management and marketing automation, according to the survey by CIO, part of IDG.
Core technologies, from infrastructure to network and storage, still receive the largest allocation of technology budgets. But in the past year, spending on edge technology, such as mobile and marketing automation, has increased 5 to 32 percent. One area that is seeing growth is applications, the survey showed.
More than half of organizations are increasing spending on apps, which is up 6 percent year over year. Mobile investments are strong as well, with 47 percent of IT executives increasing spending, followed by outsourced IT services, including cloud, at 40 percent, according to the survey.
New projects and emerging technology trends are also impacting IT spending, according to the survey. In the coming year, 47 percent of IT leaders surveyed said they will increase spending on new projects, with 36 percent allocating money for projects that directly contribute to increasing revenue, the company said.
