With economic trouble on everyone's mind, small business owners are promoting holiday sales even earlier and more intensely than last year, according to a new survey by Waltham-based Constant Contact Inc.
Of the businesses surveyed, 53 percent said they will begin marketing earlier this year than last, and 63 percent said their holiday campaigns have already started. More than three quarters of respondents said they are planning promotions this year, up from 62 percent in 2007.
Still, businesses are less than certain about how successful their efforts will be. Just 32 percent said they anticipate having a strong holiday season. Another 27 percent said no, and 41 percent were unsure. Nearly half said the December holidays are either "very" or "extremely" important to their annual revenue.
