Charlton solar facility to benefit Perkins in Lancaster

A Boston solar firm has completed its fourth community solar project in Worcester County, this one a 2.6-megawatt facility in Charlton to benefit a Lancaster human services agency.
Construction on the Sampson Road facility was completed at the end of 2017 and the 8,100-panel installation was recently approved for operations, Boston installer Nexamp said in a Monday press release.
More than 70 residents, small businesses and nonprofits have subscribed to to the project via Nexamp’s Solarize My Bill community solar program. Those customers will benefit from utility cost savings generated by the facility.
However, the project’s main user will be Perkins, a human service agency in Lancaster. The agency’s facility is estimated to save about $50,000 in the first year of operations and $1 million over the project’s lifetime.
Paired with an existing rooftop solar installation on the company’s Janeway Education Center, the project will help Perkins offset 90 percent of its electricity usage from solar energy, Perkins President and CEO MIchael Ames said.
The entire project will produce enough energy to offset more than 5.1 million pounds of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of taking 553 cars off of the road.
“This project not only promotes sustainability in the region, but allows Perkins to free up funds to better serve the children, youth, adults and families who seek our services each year,” Ames added.
