Central One Federal Credit Union of Shrewsbury is broadening the geographic area in which residents and workers can be members.
The credit union's membership area used to be 25 cities and towns in Worcester County. The company said Tuesday it is now expanding across all of Worcester County's 60 cities and towns, as well as some in western Middlesex County and Norfolk counties, which generally overlap with Central Massachusetts.
The credit union is open to anyone in Worcester County or those who work, live, worship, volunteer, attend school or own a business in some cities and towns in the other two counties. They include Lowell and surrounding towns in northern Middlesex County, and as far east as North Reading, Belmont and Waltham. In Norfolk County, membership towns now include Needham, Walpole, Foxborough and Plainville, among others.
Central One opened a 29,000-square-foot operations center next to its branch at 63 Southbridge St. in Auburn last year to accommodate its growing size, in addition to its Shrewsbury headquarters. It has more than $652 million in assets, according to the National Credit Union Administration.
