Central Massachusetts continues to see drops in the local unemployment rates as four of the region’s metropolitan areas saw lowered rates from March to April.
Greater Worcester saw its unemployment rate drop by 0.4 percentage points from 3.6% in March to 3.2% in April, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data highlighted in a Tuesday press release from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. Though experiencing a downward trend, Greater Worcester’s rate is still 0.3 percentage points higher than it was in April 2023, when the unemployment rate was 2.9%.
Experiencing the largest decrease in the unemployment rate was Greater Framingham. The area’s April figure was 2.6%, a 0.5-percentage-point decrease from March’s 3.1%. April’s numbers reflected a 0.3 percentage point increase from April 2023 when the unemployment rate was 2.3%.
The Leominster-Gardner region’s April unemployment rate saw a 0.4-percentage-point decrease in unemployment from the month prior, when the rate was 4.0%. Continuing the trend of over-the-year increases, the Leominster-Gardner region’s April unemployment rate of 3.6% was 0.2% higher than in April 2023.
The Athol region saw an unemployment rate of 3.6% in April, a 0.2-percentage-point decrease from the area's March rate of 3.8%. Though the area saw the smallest decrease in unemployment rate, it was the only of the four regions to experience a decrease from April 2023 when the rate was 4.3%, reflecting a 0.7 percentage point drop over-the-year.
Greater Framingham was the sole area of the four to experience a lower unemployment rate than the state’s reported 2.9%. At the same time, all four regions reflected lower figures than the nation’s average of 3.9%.
