Central Mass. unemployment rates climb
Unemployment rates in Central Massachusetts worsened in June but are still down considerably from June of last year, the Patrick administration said Tuesday.
Greater Worcester’s seasonally unadjusted jobless rate climbed from 5.7 to 6.1 percent over the past month, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. That’s greatly improved from the 8.1 percent unemployment rate recorded in June 2013.
MetroWest also experienced a hike, from 4.1 to 4.5 percent, with the rate much better from the 6 percent measured 12 months earlier.
Meanwhile, North Central Massachusetts saw joblessness worsen from 6.7 to 7.3 percent, which is still a marked improvement over the 9.7 percent rate recorded in June 2013.
However, the number of people employed last month rose by 4,494 (1.6 percent) in Greater Worcester, 2,535 (1.74 percent) in the Framingham area and 854 (1.28 percent) in the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area. At the same time, though, the number of unemployed in those areas rose by 1,801, 744 and 479, respectively.
Statewide, unemployment in June 2014 was 5.6 percent, 0.4 percent higher than in May and 1.8 percent lower than at this time last year. Yet on a seasonally adjusted basis – which accounts for seasonal fluctuations – unemployment fell 0.1 percent to 5.5 percent.
