Central Mass. Ready For Stimulus
Central Massachusetts public institutions weren't shy about suggesting ways that federal stimulus money could be put to work locally.
The state has ratified a total of $1.1 billion in projects at the region's colleges, state offices and other sites as "shovel-ready." Click here for a list of local projects and here for the complete state list in PDF format.
A task force created by Gov. Deval Patrick gathered the list of projects, and Patrick's newly appointed director of infrastructure investment, Jeffrey Simon, will take the lead in determining where money should be spent.
UMass Medical School in Worcester was the clear leader in local requests, with a total of $530 million in proposed projects. More than half of that would go to build a new 500,000-square-foot educational and research facility, with space for the new Advanced Therapeutics Center focusing on stem cell research, gene silencing and RNAi therapeutics. The university also requested funds for a clinical education and research facility, as well as renovations of laboratories, amphitheaters and office space and improvements to heating and power systems.
The next-largest request was from Fitchburg State College: $117 million for building renovations and expansions, elevator installations and other improvements. Worcester State College asked for $98 million, and Framingham State requested $68 million.
