Central Mass. pharmacy owner docked $200,000 for opioid violations
The owner of pharmacies in Worcester, Fitchburg and Gardner has reached a settlement with the U.S. Attorney's Office after he was found to have improperly dispensed drugs and kept flawed record-keeping.
Hamid Mohaghegh agreed to a $200,000 settlement, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.
Mohaghegh owned Fitchburg Family Pharmacy, Gardner Family Pharmacy and Worcester Family Pharmacy, which totaled eight locations in all, according to the announcement. Pharmacists and staff at the stores failed to comply with record-keeping and other requirements of the Controlled Substances Act on multiple occasions, according to the settlement.
Mohaghegh was found to have improperly dispensed Schedule II drugs, a classification that includes opioids. The violations included filling prescriptions of the narcotic Suboxone by a provider who was not certified to prescribe the drug.
“Schedule II medications are extremely addictive. Pharmacies may not dispense them without a prescription signed by a doctor who has the authority to prescribe such substances,” Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Ferguson of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New England Field Division said in a statement.
