Framingham
Framingham Co. MovesFlorida Operations
HeartWare, an Australian medical device company with U.S. operations based in Framingham, is moving its Florida manufacturing plant to an expanded, upgraded facility. The new 59,000-square-foot building in Miami Lakes is nearly twice the size of the company's current facility in Miramar, Fla. Currently leased by a division of Johnson & Johnson, the facility includes offices, labs, R&D facilities and 10,000 square feet of clean room space.
Hopkinton
Q1 Profit Down At EMC
Along with a 17 percent increase in first-quarter revenue, Hopkinton IT giant EMC Corp. reported a net income plunge of 14 percent. The company said revenue for the quarter was $3.47 billion compared to $2.97 billion for the same period a year ago. Net income for the quarter was $268 million, down from $312 million a year ago. The company said the income dip was partially due to a $79.2 million research and development charge related to acquisitions made during the quarter.
Natick
Cognex Expands In Ireland
Cognex Corp. of Natick has expanded its international manufacturing and distribution operations and moved into a new facility in Cork, Ireland. The new 20,000-square-foot building is twice as large as the company's previous location, which was also in Cork. Thirty-nine people will work at the facility.
Biz Sales, Expense Cuts Boost BSX Profits
Natick-based Boston Scientific Corp. first-quarter net income was up $202 million thanks partly to the sale of five "non-strategic" businesses. Net income for the quarter was $322 million, compared to $120 million for the same quarter last year. Sales for the quarter declined slightly to $2.046 billion, from $2.086 billion in 2008. The company saw a $114 million after-tax gain from the sale of the five businesses.
Northborough
Aspen Lands Gulf Pipeline Job
Northborough-based Apsen Aerogels will install its high-tech insulation on an undersea oil pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf project includes the insulation of 21 kilometers of pipe and is scheduled to begin later this year.
Southborough
Southborough Co. Deepens Relationship With Navy
The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has given Southborough-based Protonex Technology Corp. another $1.62 million for the development of fuel cell systems for unmanned aircraft. The company's work is now focused on increasing the power output and efficiency of its fuel cells. Its efforts have increased the range of the Navy's unmanned aircraft significantly.
Wayland
Softscape Gets New CFO
Wayland software company Softscape Inc. has hired William G. Brown as its new chief financial officer. Brown previously served as CFO at Authoria Inc. in Waltham, North Carolina-based ChannelAdvisor Corp. and Lightbridge Inc. in Marlborough.
Westborough
Genzyme Offers Test For Spinal Condition
Genzyme Genetics, the Westborough-based business unit of Genzyme Corp. of Cambridge, is now providing testing to determine if couples are at risk for having a baby with spinal muscular atrophy. The company is the first national laboratory specializing in the tests, it said. SMA is the most common inherited cause of infant mortality.
National Grid Pledges Greenhouse Gas Reduction
By 2050, international electricity and gas company National Grid will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent, the company said today. The target represents an increase from the 60 percent reduction that company, based in London and Westborough, previously promised.
Worcester
Advanced Cell Stems Tide Of Losses
Worcester-based Advanced Cell Technology Inc. reported an annual net loss for 2007 of $13.2 million on revenue from license fees and royalties of $647,349. The loss is a decrease from the $16.8 million net loss it reported for 2006 and the company's revenue is up from $440,842 in 2006. Advanced Cell restated its results for 2006, saying it had incorrectly reported the fair value of some of its outstanding loans.
