Wolf Coach Bites On $6M DoD Contract
Wolf Coach Inc. of Auburn, a division of New York-based L-3 Communications Holdings Inc., has been awarded a $6.5 million contract modification from the U.S. Department of Defense. Wolf Coach will build up to 16 mobile communications platforms, with optional upgrades, on behalf of the Naval Air Systems Command's Special Communications Requirements Division. The trucks will then be distributed throughout several agencies of the Department of Defense to meet demand for the systems.
Framingham TJX Dec. Sales Up 6 Percent
Framingham-based discount retailer TJX Cos. said its December sales reached $2.5 billion, an increase of 6 percent over the $2.3 billion the company brought in during December 2006.Same store sales increased 3 percent compared to December 2006, which was in line with the company's expectations.
Perini Awarded $590M In New Contracts
Framingham-based construction company Perini Corp. said it had been awarded $590 million in new contracts. The contracts include a $139 million Harold Structures project in Queens, N.Y., which is being undertaken by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The project includes excavation, tunneling and construction of a new electrical power substation, as well as construction and demolition of overhead and third-rail power systems.

The company has decided to implement lean manufacturing practices at its facility in order to increase capacity and decrease production lead time. The company hopes going lean will allow more peptides to be made in less time, while improving organization and safety.

Hopkinton-based Caliper Life Sciences Inc. said it expects to report total revenue of approximately $39.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2007 and approximately $140 million for the full year. The company reported revenue of $108 million for 2006.
MarlboroughSepracor Exec. Won't Lose Sleep Over Retirement
Timothy J. Barberich, executive chairman of Marlborough-based Sepracor Inc., will leave the company's employ in mid-May. Barberich and Sepracor, where he has been an executive since the company's founding in 1984, reached the retirement agreement Dec. 27. Until his last day of work May. 13, and for his service as a company advisor, which continues until Dec. 31, 2009, Barberich will receive pay equivalent to $1.6 million per year on top of his regular salary and benefits.
Marlborough Hospital Chooses Planner
Marlborough Hospital has chosen long-time partner HDR Warner+Associates of Boston to develop the hospital's strategic facility master plan. The hospital, which is part of the UMass Memorial Health Care system, has been working with Warner for the last 10 years. The firm designed the hospital's digital diagnostic imaging department and central registration and admitting area. Warner also upgraded the hospital's main ground floor corridor.
MillburyMillbury Wheelabrator Earns OSHA Nod
Wheelabrator runs some of the safest workplaces in the country, according to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA recently recertified Wheelabrator Millbury Inc.'s waste-to-energy plant in Millbury as a "star" of the department's voluntary protection program. The certification is for five years. Wheelabrator Millbury, a division of refuse giant Waste Management, employs about 50 people.

Natick-based BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. has promoted Laura Sen, a 15-year veteran of the company, to president and COO. Sen, who was previously executive vice president of merchandising and logistics, has also been elected to the company's board of directors.

Parrot Pizza has leased 1,200 square feet of space at 160 Boston Worcester Turnpike in Shrewsbury, according to the broker on the deal, Glickman Kovago & Co. Parrot Pizza, which is based in Holden, has three other locations in Massachusetts - Holden, Fitchburg and West Newton.
WorcesterHanover Acquires Fire Insurer
The Worcester-based Hanover Insurance Group Inc. has acquired Maryland-based Verlan Holdings Inc. for an undisclosed amount. Verlan provides insurance to manufacturers of chemical-related products. Its primary business is Verlan Fire Insurance Co., which provides property insurance to companies that manufacture, store, transport or use chemicals. Verlan is licensed to do business in 27 states. According to Hanover, the transaction will close by the end of the first quarter.
Long-Time Exec Takes Helm at Saint-Gobain
An executive who began his career with Saint-Gobain in Worcester 30 years ago has been named president of Worcester-based Saint-Gobain Abrasives. John Crowe comes back to Worcester from a three-year stint as president of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics in Aurora, Ohio. Saint-Gobain Abrasives has 13,000 employees and 75 manufacturing facilities in 24 countries. Its global headquarters is in Worcester.
