More than a dozen humanities-oriented organizations in Central Mass. will receive coronavirus relief through the federal CARES Act, Mass Humanities announced on Tuesday. According to the organization, which functions as the state-based affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities, $65,000 will be distributed across 13 different cultural institutions.
Under the CARES Act, the NEH received $75 million to help bolster humanities groups around the country. Of that figure, $572,500 is set to be distributed to 123 groups across the state, according to the announcement.
A Massachusetts Cultural Council survey indicated state cultural organizations have lost $260 million and thousands of jobs due to lost admission, cancelled fundraisers and staff furloughs brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
The relief funding is intended to provide unrestricted operating support for museums, libraries, archives and other nonprofit groups.
Those receiving funding include the Boylston Public Library Foundation, Inc., Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester, Townsend Historical Society, Groton History Center, Fort Devens Museum, Fitchburg Historical Society, Preservation Worcester, Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts in Worcester, Worcester County Horticultural Society, Old Sturbridge Village, Worcester Art Museum and the Worcester Historical Museum.
