Central Mass. cities get slice of $700K opioid grant

Five Central Massachusetts communities will receive part of a $700,000 grant awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Wednesday to help fight opioid addiction in the state.

Worcester, Barnstable, Fitchburg, Framingham, Leominster will each receive grants totaling $10,000 to $50,000. It will be awarded to police and fire departments to facilitate the administering of the overdose reversal drug, naloxone.

Only the communities most heavily impacted by the opioid epidemic were eligible to apply. To be eligible, they had to have six opioid overdose deaths per 100,000 people.

The other communities throughout the commonwealth receiving grants are Attleboro, Beverly, Boston, Brockton, Chelsea, Chicopee, Everett, Fall River, Falmouth, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Malden, Medford, New Bedford, North Attleboro, Peabody, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Quincy, Revere, Salem, Saugus, Somerville, Springfield, Stoughton, Taunton, Waltham, Wareham, Westfield, Weymouth, Winthrop and Woburn.
