Census, Seasonal Work Drive State’s May Job Gains

Massachusetts added 15,800 jobs in May, 7,000 of which were in the private sector, according to the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The greatest share of jobs, about 8,800, came from the government due to the temporary hiring of U.S. Census Bureau employees.

It was the fourth consecutive month of job gains for the state. The unemployment rate remained at 9.2 percent.

The labor department said April’s estimated job gains of 19,100 were revised down to 18,700.

Private sector jobs were added in industries that typically see increases in employment during the warmer months, including leisure and hospitality and construction.
