Milford’s host community agreement with Foxwoods Massachusetts became official Monday night as selectmen signed the deal with the group that wants to build a casino along Interstate 495 and Route 16.
The signing comes a week after the Board of Selectmen voted 2-1 to approve the agreement with the owners of the Foxwoods casino in Connecticut.
The board on Monday also scheduled a referendum date of Nov. 19 for residents to vote on whether the proposal should move on to the state’s gaming commission for final consideration.
The billion-dollar project would bring the town an upfront payment of $32 million, and annual payments of at least $31 million. Annual payments would be comprised of an estimated $25 million in property taxes and at least $6 million in other funding for initiatives involving school aid and an expansion of the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority.
“The Milford Board of Selectmen deserve praise for pushing us to develop the most comprehensive proposal of any applicant,” Scott Butera, Foxwoods president and CEO, said in a statement.
Foxwoods MA, also known as Crossroads Massachusetts, is competing for the one resort casino license in the “eastern” zone of the state. The other sites where developers are vying for the license are in Everett and East Boston, at the site of the Suffolk Downs race track.
