With the application deadline on Tuesday, the state gaming commission is waiting for 11th-hour applications for up to four gambling sites throughout Massachusetts that were permitted under the 2011 gaming expansion law.
The panel has already received an application and $400,000 application fee from each of four developers, none of them from Central Massachusetts. But according to a report on Boston.com, the owners of the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut have found a new financial backer for their planned resort casino in Palmer and will submit their application before Tuesday's 5 p.m. deadline.
The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority would be competing for one resort license in the western part of the state. As of last week, the commission had received two applications from developers seeking a resort casino for Springfield - MGM and Penn National Gaming - and one for West Springfield, from Hard Rock International, owners of The Hard Rock Café chain, as well as hotels and casinos around the world.
There is also one application from the owners of the Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville for the sole slots parlor license allowed under the law. Published reports last month said a Cambridge developer was considering buying a site near Worcester's Kelley Square to build a hotel and slots parlor. As of today, no application had been submitted for that site.
