Cape Wind Lease Signed In New Jersey

Cape Wind signed the first lease for an offshore wind farm in the federal waters of the United States this morning at the American Wind Energy Association's Offshore Wind Conference in Atlantic City.

The lease, which was signed by U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Cape Wind President Jim Gordon, authorizes Cape Wind to construct its 130-turbine offshore wind farm in Nantucket Sound, and to operate the facility for 25 years.

In a press release, Gordon said the lease "sends an important market signal to the offshore wind industry that the United States is ready to move forward and that Cape Wind will be the first of many offshore wind projects in this country."

In September, the U.S. Department of Energy issued a draft plan that calls for the United States to install 54,000 megawatts of offshore wind power capacity by 2030.

Such an effort would require more than 100 Cape Wind-sized projects.

The Cape Wind project has recently come under fire for its agreement with National Grid, which will charge nearly 19 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity generated by the wind farm.
