Green Meadows, a Southbridge-based cannabis company founded by descendants of famous World War II General George Patton, has broken ground in Marlborough on its third retail location.

The new dispensary is expected to be completed in early 2025, at which point it can receive licensing approvals by state and local authorities. Green Meadow has existing retail operations in Fitchburg and at its headquarters in Southbridge, with the new Marlborough location expected to serve both recreational and medical customers.

“We are proud to bring the Green Meadows experience to Marlborough,” Bob Patton, CEO of Green Meadows and grandson of General Patton, said in a Friday press release announcing the groundbreaking. “Against the grain of industry challenges, we continue to grow, staying true to our commitment to patients and customers. This new location is a testament to our belief in the positive power of cannabis and our dedication to serving the communities of Massachusetts.”

The freestanding 2,800-square-foot building is being constructed at 219-237 Boston Post Road West, in a shopping plaza owned by RK Centers of Needham. The location was originally slated to be a dispensary operated by Cal Verde Naturals, a company with an existing dispensary in Belmont.

Assuming all goes to plan, Green Meadows’ new dispensary will be Marlborough’s fourth. The closest dispensary is located less than a mile west on Boston Post Road and is the sole location of KOSA, a Marlborough-based cannabis retailer. Marlborough’s two other dispensaries, operated by Fitchburg-based Garden Remedies and Marlborough-based Local Roots, are on Boston Post Road East, closer to the city’s border with Sudbury.

The announcement of the groundbreaking comes at a time where dispensaries in Central Massachusetts are both opening and closing, as many industry players struggle to deal with mounting debt and market saturation. Dealing with a still federally-illegal substance, access to traditional banking and funding resources has improved for cannabis businesses since legalization in 2016, but remains a challenge.

Green Meadows opened in 2021 and operates a cultivation and production facility from its headquarters in Southbridge.
