California man admits ID theft

Federal prosecutors say a California man has admitted stealing more than $200,000 in an identity theft scheme that defrauded banks in New England.

Authorities say 52-year-old Marvin Baker, of Richmond, Calif., pleaded guilty in federal court in New Haven to bank fraud.

Baker is accused of using the identities of California residents and traveling to Bank of America locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts last March where he deposited fraudulent checks into legitimate bank accounts and withdrew cash.

Baker defrauded Bank of America of $211,450 as a result of the scheme, authorities said.

He faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million when he is sentenced March 28.
