The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection fined California firm Chevron Environmental Management Co. $12,000 for failing to disclose elevated levels of petroleum compounds in a residential basement near Shrewsbury.
Chevron reportedly detected elevated petroleum compounds when investigating potential soil vapor issues at the company's property at 14 Putnam Lane, which could have gone into residential buildings nearby. The company reportedly found elevated petroleum compounds in the basement of a residential development on Nebraska Street and did not report it to MassDEP until asked about it.
They were required, under state regulations, to report the finding within 72 hours, according to MassDEP.
"Timely notification is essential so that MassDEP can work with responsible parties to quickly undertake actions to mitigate risk to persons potentially affected by the release," said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester.
