Calif. Company To Buy Part Of Steward

A California-based company will become the new overseer of “hospitalist services,” those handled by physicians who care for admitted patients at nine health care facilities in Massachusetts owned by Steward Health Care System. Those facilities include Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer.

IPC The Hospitalist Company Inc., based in North Hollywood, Calif., said it has signed an agreement with Steward in a deal that’s expected to close in September, according to Christopher Murphy, a spokesman for Steward. Financial terms are not being disclosed.

Murphy said the deal will probably impact two or three physicians at Nashoba Valley, which has 57 licensed beds and employs 325.

IPC, a public company whose stock is traded on the Nasdaq exchange, already has a similar contract with Steward at one facility, IPC said.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Mike Callum, president of Steward Medical Group, said, "A highly functioning hospitalist service is critical to the quality of care that we deliver to our patients.”

“This partnership will help us build and strengthen our community care model,” Callum said. “Increasing our efficiency while standardizing care throughout our system will improve quality and lower cost. IPC is best-in-class in the health care industry and one of the foremost experts on hospital care in the country.”
