Outdoor gear retailer Cabela's Inc. will open its first Massachusetts location in Berlin, the publicly traded company announced today.
Construction on the 88,000-square-foot store at the Highland Commons Shopping Center will begin in the spring of 2014 with an opening planned for 2015. The company's closest store to Central Massachusetts is in East Hartford.
"Our many loyal customers across Massachusetts have supported Cabela's for many years through our catalogs, website and other retail locations," said Tommy Millner, the company's CEO.
The company said the Berlin store would employ approximately 200 full-time and part-time workers.
Cabela's will be joining BJ's Wholesale Club, Lowe's Home Improvement and Market Basket at Highland Commons, which is being developed by Benderson Development and SullivanHayes Cos.
The store will have log construction, stonework and a large glass storefront. It will carry hunting, fishing and other outdoor products, and will also have an indoor archery range, gun library and fudge shop, the company said.
The Berlin store is a part of a larger expansion. Cabela's has 44 stores in North America and has announced plans to build 16 more over the next two years. The company also announced new stores in Texas and New York today.
Cabela's reported $3.11 billion in sales in 2012, up from $2.81 billion in 2011. Its sales are up 18 percent since 2009, according to its public financial filings.
