Business stars collect awards

By jeffrey t. lavery

The 91st annual meeting of the Wachusett Chamber of Commerce honored large and small area companies in a variety of fields, and featured additional awards reflecting a membership boost.

The March 29 event at Wachusett Country Club recognized Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC) as the 2006 Business of the Year for its continued expansion. The school has grown to include three satellite locations and is currently involved in a proposed biotech program that would feature $100,000 worth of lab space.

"Our involvement in this community has reached a crescendo," said Daniel Asquino, president of MWCC. "We have a growing workforce training program, and our students are coming back to this area to work."

Legacy Publishing Group, a manufacturer of stationary and gift items, received the Small Business of the Year award. The 16-person operation was recognized for regularly supporting local and national not-for-profit agencies, and was also noted for its employee satisfaction in the form of a solid benefits package and low turnover.

"We have a wealth of talent to tap into in this area," said Carlos Llanso, CEO of Legacy Publishing. "For any business owner, your biggest challenge is finding that workforce."

Other award winners included:

• The Outstanding Individual award went to Richard Traina, president of Tuttle & Traina Insurance, Agency, Inc. In addition to building the agency from 2 to 11 employees since its inception in 1993, Traina was nominated for his involvement in the Wachusett Chamber and Rotary Club.

• Uptown Inc. collected the newly-added Economic Development award for its role in winning $750,000 in grants for rehabbing the downtown Clinton area, and a second grant for $75,000 to help clean up blights on the Main Street area.

• Through fund-raising and donations into the community, the Clinton Rotary Club was given the Community Focus award, the second of two new awards. Among several groups, the non-profit agency contributed to the Clinton Hospital Foundation and the Nypro FIRST Team, a collaboration between businesses and area high schools to build robots.
