The Baker administration is hearing new calls to take immediate steps to fix the MBTA, which has been unable for two weeks to deliver basic transit services in the face of severe winter weather.
"Going forward, we need to learn from this experience. Severe storms are becoming the norm and will likely increase in frequency," Rick Dimino, president and CEO of A Better City, said in a statement Thursday. "We are calling on the Baker administration and all of our transportation officials to take immediate steps to better prepare the transit system for this type of weather."
A nonprofit with deep ties to the Boston business community, A Better City said state transportation officials and the MBTA "should reexamine their capital plans and prioritize the maintenance and upgrades needed for traction power and signal systems, third rails, switches and needed vehicle repairs and replacement."
Senate Republicans on Thursday also called on Baker to take action.
“These past few weeks of arctic cold temperatures coupled with abnormal amounts of precipitation have stressed the need for further action to prevent the type of commuter gridlock that has prevented so many from receiving a timely commute to work, home, and other important destinations,” the six-member caucus wrote in a letter to the governor.
