BSX Devices For Sale In Europe

Boston Scientific Corp. of Natick said the first in a line of new defibrillators, which are designed to treat heart failure and prevent sudden cardiac death, have been implanted in patients in Europe and other international markets.

BSX said the devices, sold under the names Energen and Punctua, are the smallest and thinnest devices of their kind.

The company said the products' size allows for easier implantation and make them less visible on patients. It also touted their longevity, saying the devices may reduce the need for additional implant surgeries.

The devices received CE Mark approval, permitting their use in many European countries, in October 2010. They are considered investigational devices in the U.S., but may receive approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration late this year or early next year, the company said.
