Two Massachusetts residents, including a man in Brookfield, who were charged with unemployment fraud will pay almost $64,000 in restitution to the Department of Unemployment Assistance, Attorney General Maura Healey announced on Tuesday.
Matthew Mandigo, 34, of Brookfield, admitted to sufficient facts in Suffolk Superior Court and was ordered to pay full restitution of $31,344. According to Healey’s office, Mandigo received unemployment benefits while working from January 2014 to August 2017.
Nirmala Ramnarain, 49, of Boston, pleaded guilty to three counts of larceny over $250 by single scheme, as well as six counts of unemployment fraud in Suffolk Superior Court. According to Healey’s office, Ramnarain received unemployment benefits while working between January 2014 and January 2017. She was sentenced to three years of probation under the condition that she pay $32,650 in full restitution.
Both were indicted in November 2019.
“Unemployment insurance provides a lifeline for tens of thousands of people across the state, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Healey, in a press release. “It’s important that every dollar spent goes to someone who actually needs it, and not to people trying to cheat the system.”
