Brookfield Celebrates New Solar Array

Virginia-based Washington Gas Energy Systems unveiled its fourth Central Massachusetts solar array at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Brookfield on Nov. 1, marking the start of a 20-year power purchasing agreement between Washington Gas and the town.

The 434-kilowatt system, comprised of 1,846 solar panels , is located on a capped landfill at 9 Quaboag St. According to Washington Gas, it will produce more than 500,000 hours of clean energy annually, equivalent to the total annual electrical usage of about 100 average single-family homes. It will also help power Brookfield schools, Town Hall, and streetlights.

Rudy Heller, chair of the Brookfield Solar Project Committee, said the town is “leapfrogging” into the 21st century by embracing solar energy.

“The town is not only reducing its carbon footprint, but we have added a guaranteed revenue stream to our budgetary process,” Heller said.

In addition to Brookfield, Washington Gas owns and operates solar projects in the Central Massachusetts towns of Bellingham, Southbridge and Maynard.
