Worcester recently landed at No. 2 in a ranking of the happiest cities in America to work in. What’s got people in New England’s second-largest city smiling? According to results of a voluntary survey by the website CarrerBliss.com, Worcester laborers enjoy their coworkers, bosses and daily activities. Only Miami ranked better.
How did CareerBliss determine the rankings?
CarrerBliss.com is an online community in which people rank and review their jobs and compare salaries with industry standards, among other features. Each year, officials with the California-based company compile the rankings from all of the voluntary reviews that are collected from businesses around the country to create the list.
What specific criteria is used?
The company uses the following criteria to rank the cities: employees’ “relationship with their boss and co-workers, work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, their daily tasks and control over the work they do on a daily basis.”
What are Worcester’s strengths?
Worcester had strong results in categories that asked workers how they view their co-workers and their relationship with their managers, as well as the work they do each day. Worcester workers also reported a higher average annual salary: $54,524 compared to Miami’s $53,764.
What are the other happiest cities in the country?
Behind Worcester and Miami, Oklahoma City ranked third, followed by San Jose, Calif.; Oxnard, Calif.; Wichita, Kan.; Killeen, Texas; Syracuse, N.Y.; San Antonio and Provo, Utah. Miami and San Jose have ranked in the top 10 for each of the past two years.
Where are the unhappiest places to work?
Workers in New Haven, Conn., are the unhappiest group. New Haven was followed by Dayton, Ohio, Milwaukee, Tulsa, Okla., and Albuquerque, N.M.
