Gov. Deval Patrick wants to do for the IT industry what he has done for the life sciences industry.
The governor met with 40 executives from IT companies this morning to kickstart a campaign to recruit high-tech firms to locate in Massachusetts.
Greg Bialecki, state undersecretary of business development at the Office of Housing and Economic Development, held a conference call today to describe the plan. He said the Patrick administration wants to make the state a center for IT excellence. To that end the state will focus on recruiting companies to locate here.
Bialecki also said the state has asked the John Adams Innovation Institute to create a collaborative for the IT industry as it did for the life sciences industry several years ago. A report on the industry is being conducted this year by the Adams Institute and the Donahue Institute at the University of Massachusetts. The report will be released late this spring or in the summer.
Patrick also plans to take a three-day trip to Washington and California within the next week to meet with top IT executives from companies like Microsoft, Google, and from those in venture capital, clean energy, life sciences and video game publishing.
"Given our current economic times, it's extremely important that the governor have a direct, personal relationship with these leaders," said Bialecki.
Deeper relationships with company leaders would mean that the governor could advocate for Massachusetts employees of West Coast companies and help those employers keep workers and operations in Massachusetts.
