Brass City gets bashed, Forbes-style

The bi-weekly national business magazine Forbes has lashed out at Waterbury in a scathing article touting the Brass City as a "has been," a haven for corruption and a "29-square-mile junk pile."

Citing a history of mayoral scandal and election tampering (dead people rocked the vote in 1986) as well as a 20 percent poverty rate and abominable schools, the article said, "in this year's survey of best places in which to do business, Waterbury gets the booby prize."

The final corrupt straw, the article said, is the hiring of ex-Gov. John G. Rowland to be the public face of the Waterbury Development Corp. Rowland's new job, which will pay him $95,000 per year, is convincing existing employers to expand in the city and bringing new businesses in.

The timing is great for Rowland, the article says, since his post-prison term ankle bracelet was removed in 2006. The article does touch on the city's illustrious and productive past, but that wasn't enough to combat the negative.

Backlash has already hit the Forbes Web site. One reader, claiming to be Waterbury born and raised, said in a posted comment: "It is not "Waterbury" herself that has done wrong but those individuals and not one of those men represent the people of Waterbury who make it great where it counts."
