The Boys & Girls Club of Worcester is teaming up with the nonprofit 2Gether We Eat, also of Worcester, to launch a youth hydroponic farming program.
The program, which is intended to teach young people how to grow vegetables using hydroponic farming techniques, will include an on-site farm at the Boys & Girls Club. The farm will include 135 plants expected to be harvested several times a year, providing year-round food production.
“What excites me about the pilot program is that our kids will take the lead in growing, harvesting and cooking their food. These will be skills they can utilize throughout their lives. In addition, it supports our Healthy Habits programming of encouraging kids to eat more fruits and vegetables,” said Liz Hamilton, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, in a statement.
2Gether We Eat is a nonprofit working to combat food crises and food deserts in the communities it serves. All fruits and vegetables grown by the organization are donated to food banks and other nonprofits.
A ribbon cutting marked the program’s opening on Monday.
