Boxborough Add To Slots Mix Could Tip Scale To MetroWest

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will now weigh four bids for the state's only slots parlor license now that Cordish Cos. of Baltimore has proposed a $200 million site just off Interstate 495 in Boxborough. One intriguing part of the competition for that license is that three of the four sites (the others are in Plainville and Raynham) are close to that highway. The exception is the Worcester proposal, which would put a slots parlor between its downtown and Kelley Square district.

We've written it before but it bears repeating: The Worcester proposal appears inconsistent with the city's long evolving economic development strategy, and we fear that a slots parlor in an urban setting will have a more acutely negative effect on nearby residents. The fact that the other three proposed sites are being proposed for more isolated settings may tip that scale to a spot somewhere along 495.
