Boulevard Diner in Worcester announced on Saturday it will cease its 24-hour operation after being open 24/7 for the better part of 70 years, diner staffer Danielle Beshai confirmed Monday morning.
The Shrewsbury Street eatery posted on Facebook to announce its new hours of operation, which will be from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The decision was a result of low patronage during the nighttime hours, which became a problem when the coronavirus pandemic hit, Beshai said in a phone interview. She said owner Jim George is eager to reopen full-time as soon as more customers start returning.
Boulevard Diner has closed its third shift twice since the coronavirus pandemic began, once in March 2020 and once in January 2021. It reopened full-time in May shortly after Worcester’s mask mandate ended, according to Facebook posts.
The historic diner was built in 1935 by the Worcester Lunch Car Company, per the Massachusetts Cultural Resources Information System.
